Great Ocean Road

 Kilometer
6100-6500

The Great Ocean Road runs from just outside of Melbourne along the southern coast to Port Fairy, a twisting and turning spectacular ride of over 250 kilometers. Sheer cliffs, brilliant beaches, and plenty of history are the hallmarks of the famous road.

I played golf just after the ocean road started at a public course in Anglesea... The course is fairly famous for its huge resident population of kangaroos... I was not disappointed. And yes, sports fans, that is my ball on the green in regulation (missed the birdie putt).

The Loch Ard Gorge is near the end of the Ocean Road and is famous for the 12 Apostles, monolithic sandstone formations that have eroded away from the mainland. This part of the coast is also quite infamous for causing ship wrecks... One of the worst was the Loch Ard sailing from London in the late 1800's. It wrecked here and all but 2 of the 50 on board were lost. The formation in the right most picture is called "London Bridge". In 1990, just after two tourists crossed to the end, the archway connecting the now isolated island fell into the sea -- the tourists had to be rescued by helicopter!

An old volcano crater and a resident Emu, an ostrich like flightless bird (good meat as well!)
