January in Southern Africa, then off to the Winter Olympics for 10 days (BRRR!) then snowboarding in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho for 6 weeks with Rafe... Follow that up with the National Bridge Championship in Houston, then back to LA for a month of hardcore volleyball. Up to Vancouver for end of season boarding, then back on the poker tour. Another month at the World Series of Poker saw a third place finish in $2500 Omaha Hi-Lo and a 6th place finish in Pot-Limit Texas Holdem. Won nearly $100,000 in prize money. It was at the WSOP that I purchased the USA RV. Gave up my place in Vegas and started round the country on an RV trial... LA, Phoenix, Houston, Austin, New Orleans, Atlanta, Columbia (SC), Raleigh, family reuniun in Wrightsville NC, Washington DC, New York, Seagirt Jersey Coast, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Aspen, Portland, Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco, and back to LA... a clean 12,000 miles over 3 months. Invited to Aruba for the Ultimate Bet World Poker Tour... beat 7 of the best players in the world and claimed $250,000 in prize money... look for the documentary on national television in early 2003. Back in LA, worked very hard for the rest of the year to get the Ultimate Sports Adventure all set up... Check out all of the action in 2003!!! |

2001... Fifteen minutes of fame... Again, most of the winter in Tahoe at home... after a relationship disaster, headed to Vegas with my buddy Rafe for the World Series of Poker. Somehow managed a 4th place finish in the World Championship -- payday of $400,000 and a celebrity spot on the Travel Channel documentary "Inside the World Series of Poker". Decided shortly thereafter to move to Vegas and get back on the road... so sold the Tahoe house, packed it all up, and got a place in Sin City. More travels: Estero Beach Volleyball Tournament, a Carribean Cruise (Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Bahamas, Keys), Motherload Volleyball tournament in Aspen, two months backpacking in Spain, a month in Germany -- Octoberfest is not to be missed! -- Amsterdam, London, Belgium... Then volleyball in LA for a month... followed that with the calm before the storm... 10 days in Turks and Caicos, followed by a two month African safari through South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. It was on this trip that Rafe and I hatched the idea for "The Ultimate Sports Adventure"... |

Ah, 2000... Millenium in Costa Rica, then snowboarding in Tahoe all winter... trips all over, including North Carolina, Hawaii, a month in New Zealand, Philadelphia, three weeks in Vietnam, and Salt Lake City... No real updates, of course, because life "at home" is rather boring. A well deserved break from the vagaries of the third world. |

My world journey started as a vacation -- the first in three years. On the advice of a dear friend I left for Indonesia and Thailand. The things I saw and the great time that I had convinced me to retire, sell my worldly possessions, and hit the road as a full-time backpacker. |
